After
reserving your holiday, remember to organise your route and
car ferry crossings. For
ferry timetable and booking information see the Caledonian
MacBrayne website, and the Lochaber
Transport website for the Corran ferry.
For
planning car travel within Mull and around Ardnamurchan and Morvern,
please remember that journey times on single track
roads can
be significantly longer than you may be used to! As an example, the
trip from
Tobermory to Fionnphort (60 miles) for the Iona ferry can often take
the best part of one-and-a-half hours. Please always allow
following vehicles
to pass on single track roads.
| Oban (mainland
Argyll) to Craignure (on Mull). These
sailings can fill up several weeks in advance in the summer season,
so book in advance. This is the longest crossing (45 minutes)
but is the largest ferry and most popular route from the south.
If you are travelling from Edinburgh or Glasgow the
quickest way is via Tyndrum, however from Glasgow
(and Loch Lomond) a more scenic route goes through Inverary.
A good time to allow for travel to Oban from central Edinburgh
or Glasgow is three and a half hours - remember
also that you must be at the Oban ferry terminal at least
30 minutes before departure. |
|
| Lochaline (mainland
Morvern) to Fishnish (on Mull). To
reach Lochaline, travel across the short car ferry between Corran
Ferry (south of Fort William) and Ardgour (Morvern).
Neither of these ferries are bookable, just turn up in good time.
The Lochaline ferry involves the shortest crossing time to Mull
(15 minutes), but is a longer drive from Tyndrum than
the Oban route - however taking mileage and all ferry tickets
into account, for an average car it is comparable in overall
travel cost. You have the opportunity to travel across the scenic Rannoch
Moor, and through dramatic Glencoe before
crossing the Morvern peninsula. |
|
| Kilchoan (Ardnamurchan)
to Tobermory (on Mull). This
is another non-bookable service (35 minutes), also via Corran
Ferry, and with more beautiful scenery going through Strontian and
then the Ardnamurchan Peninsula & Loch Sunart. This
route involves 30 miles (45 mins) more driving than the Lochaline
route, but brings you right into the heart of Tobermory and less
than 100 metres from Back Brae Lodge. |
|
| You
can now also travel to Tobermory with Loch
Lomond Seaplanes from the Clyde - around £180 each
way! |
